WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM AIT HEARING RETRAINING?

A comprehensive AIT assessment determines whether or not the individual is a candidate for AIT. Some of the greatly varied behavioral indicators of auditory difficulties are:

  • Does not appear to hear some sounds or voices
  • Humming, droning, wanders aimlessly, frequent yells or audible self-talk
  • "Startles" with sudden noise or movement.
  • Covers ears or avoids sounds (lawn mower, vacuum, etc.)
  • Complains that sounds hurt the ears
  • Dislikes (or has unusual reactions to) sounds of wind, running water, car radio, blender, lawn mower, vacuum cleaner, dog barking, restaurants, children's voices or laughter
  • Seeks out or fixates on sounds (water, washing machine, etc.)
  • Complies with simple requests, gets bogged down with multiple step instructions
  • Speech may be noticeably too fast, slow, or too loud or too soft
  • Voice lacks inflection, resonance, or tone
  • Child mispronounces words or does not enunciate clearly
  • Continuing complaints and demands - "too hot," Want cookie,"etc.
  • Insists on control: TV must be low/high, doors open/shut, etc.
  • Tantrums or upsets that require "time out" to restore sanity
  • Balky, confused, or non-compliant when two or more relate to him at once
  • Generally works her "own way", rarely from start to finish
  • Fixated with organization - or is completely haphazard
  • Flits from one thing to the other
  • Responsive to facial expression, tone of voice, and gestures when given a verbal request · Frequently gives odd or inappropriate response in conversation
  • Wild or hyperactive movement in noisy environments
  • Erratic movements
  • Affect and expression are not completely appropriate
  • Child avoids eye contact
  • Child craves physical pressure
  • Child avoids touch
  • Child is a "loner", seems to lack interest in communicating or interacting with others
  • Child is unsure of left and right
  • Odd or inappropriate toileting behaviors; bed-wetting
  • Child eats alone, will not share mealtime with others
  • Rude or aggressive with peers or adults
